April 13th Widnes SciBar

Light sabers to light scapels; making practical tools from light

Senior Lecturer in Advanced Sensor Technologies,
Department of Civil Engineering,
Liverpool John Moores University

Duncan is a multidisciplinary researcher with a background in analytical instrumentation and surface chemistry. Originally based at the Institute of Chemical Biology at Imperial College in London, he moved to Liverpool John Moores University in 2014 to develop his research in microfluidic platforms for chemical analysis and drug delivery, and to explore the potential of recent discoveries in single cell biology using thin film semiconductors. Alongside his academic studies, Dr Casey develops instrumentation for his spin -off company, anywhereHPLC Ltd. [You can read about Imperial spin out company here].

Duncan's talk will address some of the challenges and needs for instrumentation in the contemporary Life Sciences. When scientists want to investigate very small systems like individual cells, a very precise toolkit is needed with the ability to pick up and deliver material at tiny length scales. Focused, shaped light enables researchers to dissect cells or deliver material using nothing more than a laser beam.

Presented by Friends of Catalyst and the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre

7:30 pm, Wed 13th April 2016 at the Hillcrest Hotel, Cronton Lane, Widnes, WA8 9AR

Widnes SciBar is for anyone with an interest in science or a wish to know more about science.
